Come take a drive with me!

Take a drive with me. The windows are down, there’s dirt on the floor mats from little boots, and the scent of lilacs drifts in from the roadside. Out here in our part of Wisconsin, you don’t have to go far to find beauty—it’s tucked into hillsides, blooming from greenhouse benches, and waiting at the end of a gravel road.

Every spring, our countryside transforms. Barn doors open. “Greenhouse Open” signs pop up like wildflowers. And just like that, it’s greenhouse season.

Around here, a trip to the greenhouse is more than just shopping for petunias or pepper plants—it’s tradition. It’s picking out marigolds with your grandma. It’s chasing your kids down the rows of tomatoes. It’s neighbors chatting over begonias, catching up after a long winter.

Each greenhouse has its own rhythm. Some are tucked behind family homes, others have been passed down for generations. You’ll find heirloom tomatoes next to painted flower pots, and the best advice from folks who’ve been growing longer than we’ve been driving.

Here’s why I make the time for these drives, and why you might want to, too:

  • The people — Friendly faces, dirty hands, and a wealth of gardening wisdom.

  • The quality — Locally grown, hardy plants that know our weather and soil.

  • The feeling — Stepping into a warm greenhouse on a cool spring morning feels like hope wrapped in humidity.

  • The inspiration — You’ll leave with more ideas than your garden can hold.

We’re lucky—Trempealeau and Jackson Counties are full of hidden gems. Amish-run greenhouses overflowing with hanging baskets. Family farms with pick-your-own veggie starters. Garden centers that turn into weekend destinations. You just have to know where to look—or ask a neighbor.

As someone who works in homes and hears people’s stories every day, I believe some of the best parts of a home grow outside, too. In the backyard. In a flower pot by the door. In the effort someone took to add beauty to their corner of the world.

So this season, take the drive. Bring a friend. Load up on soil and stories. Let your roots stretch a little, and let your space bloom—inside and out.

& if your home dreams include space for a garden, I’d be honored to help you find the perfect plot to plant your roots.

🌷 With dirt under my nails and joy in my heart,

Happy Greenhouse Season from your gals at LOYH
